Alice in Wondercan sculpture at CANstruction 2024 exhibit

CANstruction 2024

An amazing event that helps to feed those who are food insecure.

Hello Friends! In today’s post we head to Brookfield Place for the 2024 CANstruction event. This ongoing event happening now through November 11 displays 23 structures made entirely using canned food.

If you have never seen this exhibit and are in the NYC area, this is definitely one you don’t want to miss. It’s a great place to bring the kids to view the can sculptures. We’ve come the past few years and every year we are amazed by the creativity of the teams! The sculptures are very fun and elaborate. Our 7 year old LOVES to check it out and it also provides an opportunity for conversations about giving back and how we can help those who are less fortunate. Our 7 year old likes selecting which canned foods to donate at the CANstruction.

This year we donated items like Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom, canned sweet corn and canned beans. What also impresses me with CANstruction is how many people this event will help. Just look at how many people each sculpture can feed! You can actually tally all the people the event will feed. It’s amazing and very humbling.

What Is CANstruction?

CANstruction is an annual design competition where teams of architects, engineers and contractors build large scale sculptures made entirely of cans of food. The sculpture displays are open to the public to view and afterwards, the unopened cans of food are then donated to City Harvest to help feed people in need. The public is also invited to participate by donating canned foods or through donation.

This year, 23 teams participated in the CANstruction build.

Where Can I see the CANstruction exhibit?

CANstruction can be viewed at Brookfield Place, 230 Vesey Street, in lower Manhattan, NY.

Are Tours available?

Tours are currently sold out however, walk ins are welcome.

How Can I Participate?

All the cans used in the competition will be donated to City Harvest to help feed people in need. If you’d like to donate, please bring unopened cans of food to the main Winter Garden atrium 10am-7pm.

After viewing the exhibit, you can vote for the sculpture you like the best here.

Young children can stop by the information table for an activity worksheet to help guide them through the exhibit.

If you’re unable to make it to CANstruction, please check out our photos and consider donating this season to those who are food insecure in your local food bank or charity.
